My father spent 6 years working in England and Scotland for NATO. I went over to England twice to visit him. The second time, the whole family went to Ireland to see our "roots". We are Scotch/Irish. That means that the Clan we came from were mercenaries sent to Ireland to keep the locals under control. My Grandmother is also a descendant of the owner of Dairy County in Ireland. It became London Dairy when he decided to burn the county down to avoid paying taxes to England. Her maiden name Daugherty means hard headed and disagreeable. I love telling her that.
But I digress. When we arrived in Ireland we asked the cab driver to take us to the hotel and what the best way to get around Cork was. We had several points in mind that weren't much more than piles of stone in a field so he asked "Why do you want to see that?"
My father explained that they were old castles that our ancestors had owned.d
The rest of the conversation went like this:
Cabbie: Who are your related to?
Dad: The MacDonald Clan and Kahir O'Daugherty.
Cabbie: You are going to be sorely disappointed.
Dad: Why?
Cabbie: The MacDonald Clan was nothing but reprobates and thieves!
Me: Yes!
Dad: Really?
Cabbie: And Kahir O'Daugherty was worse!
The Cabbie then went on to explain all the horrible things my family did to his. We had a great cab ride. We had such an interesting time that we took him out for a pint at the pub and listened to some Irish Folk Music.
This song is my favorite. I could only find this version on Youtube.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
