Scientists measure cow emissions
Cows are being kept inside 'bio-bubbles' so scientists can measure gas emissions.
The University of California project will be used to help write the state's first air quality regulations for dairies.
Cows are placed inside the bio-bubbles where monitors measure the gases that they emit. It's been estimated that an average herd of cows causes more pollution than a car.
But researcher Frank Mitloehner believes the problem may have been over-estimated.
First, this reminds me of late night drunken emissions studies at WVU. There is nothing like breaking wind in a dilution tunnel to see if your hydrocarbon analyzer can measure it.
Second, see the guy in the back? Yes, that guy in the white shirt and blue jeans. The day before the first study we had him over for some "extra special" soup beans and corn bread. If he was in the bio bubble, there is no wonder they over estimated the emissions from cows.
Third, what will California do? Will they try to put catalytic converters on cows?
